THERAPY  [Top]
Seeking the services of a counselor is not an act to be entered into lightly, as the material that is dealt with is usually very delicate and uncomfortable.  A counselor is dedicated to helping the client work through problems as directly and sensitively as possible.  Successful counseling also requires that the client be dedicated to openness and honesty.  Hiding or denying only delays the resolution of the problem and prolongs the emotional pain, sometimes even increasing it.  A counselor seeks to be both kind and effective to promote genuine emotional, relational and spiritual healing.

During the course of your relationship with us questions may arise about Family Life Counseling and our work.  Feel free to discuss your questions with your counselor. Washington state law requires us to share some basic information with you.

CONFIDENTIALITY  [Top]
Counseling sessions are held in strict confidence.  It is the client, not the therapist, who determines whether information may be released.  No records are copied or released without your written permission.  Reports to physicians and insurance companies will not divulge personal material that has been given in confidence.

Exceptions to this rule are:

  1. State law mandates that there is no confidentiality where child abuse or abuse of a developmentally disabled adult has occurred within the last seven years.
  2. The counselor may also be required to breach confidentiality in life threatening situations where the client poses a clear and present danger to self and others or is unable to provide minimum life-sustaining self-care.  Here the counselor would take necessary steps to secure the safety of the client or others.
DISCLOSURE  [Top]
"Counselors practicing counseling for a fee must be registered or certified with the Department of Health for the protection of public health and safety.  Registration of an individual with the department does not include a recognition of any practice standards, nor necessarily implies the effectiveness of any treatment."  Clergy are not required to be registered or certified under the present law.
RIGHTS OF CLIENTS  [Top]
It is appropriate for clients to raise questions about the counselor, the therapeutic approach, and progress.  As informed consumers it is the client's responsibility to choose the counselor and counseling modality which best suits their needs.  Clients have the right to request a change in counseling approach, referral to another counselor or termination at any time.
FEES  [Top]
Fees are established during the initial session and may be adjusted according to the client's ability to pay.  Family Life Counseling holds its fees below the prevailing community rate in an effort to extend counseling services to more individuals.  Your sessions may be all or partially covered by mental health provisions in your health insurance policy.  Family Life Counseling will make every effort to satisfy policy requirements for eligibility for coverage however the responsibility is yours to settle your FLC office account as this agreement is with you and not your insurance company.
HOURS  [Top]
The office is open by appointment only.  Days and hours for counseling sessions are determined by the individual counselor.  No walk-in hours are available.  Making an appointment is a contract between the counselor and the client that both will be present at the appointed time.  We are aware that genuine emergencies do arise which preclude the keeping of an appointment.  If you must cancel please give 24 hours notice.  Voice mail is available 24 hours a day.  Insufficient notice may result in a charge of one-half the session fee as the time is committed and others may not be scheduled at the last moment.
